Azzam’s professional journey
encompasses more than 20
years’ experience as medical leader, physician educator, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.
He embraces the concept of Clinical Governance and the
Lean methodology as clients
and staff empowering
strategies for system wide
quality improvements. His commitment to quality, patient
and family centered care, teaching and lifelong learning is evident throughout his career. As a transformational
leader, he fosters a culture of clinical excellence through collaboration, leading by example, innovation and constructive change. His portfolio has many research
projects, publications and presentations at both national
and international events.
Dr Azzam started his career by completing his medical
degree at the University of Jordan followed by
postgraduate training and practice in Jordan, Lebanon,
Qatar, and the UK before moving to Manitoba in 2008 as
the Vice President for Medical Services in the former Burntwood Regional Health Authority. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University of Manitoba (U of M), a practicing Obstetrician
and Gynaecologist and a Surveyor with Accreditation
Canada.His medical credentials include a Fellow of the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
(FRCSC), a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians
and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) in the United Kingdom (UK)
and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG).
He has almost ten years of senior executive leadership experience as Vice Chair for the Provincial Medical
Leadership Council (PMLC) in Manitoba, Vice President for Medical Services, Chief Medical Officer, Regional Chief of
Staff and Medical Director. He is distinguished as the first physician in Manitoba to achieve the Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential with a proven track record in recruiting and retaining medical staff,
implementing clinical governance, championing medical education and training, and improving patient access to healthcare and service development.
Dr Azzam has extensive experience in corporate
governance and financial management. He was elected to
the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecology of Canada (SOGC) Board of Directors in 2012 and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba (CPSM) Council in
2016. Presently he is the chair of the SOGC Obstetrics
Clinical Practice Committee, Co-Chair of the CPSM
Complaints Committee, member of the CPSM Executive Committee, member of the SOGC Finance Committee, and member of the Salus Global Finance Committee. He also served as a Director of the Diagnostic Service Manitoba
(DSM) Board of Directors and a member of the DSM Governance Committee for five years.
Dr Azzam is an established medical educator with special focus on assessment and curriculum development. He completed a Master’s degree in Medical Education
(MMedEd) from University of Winchester in the UK. He is
an examiner with U of M and University of Southampton as well as a course director for the Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) and the Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM) Courses. In 2015 in recognition of
his experience as an educator and for the contribution he made to medical education over many years, he was
awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (FAcadMEd) in the UK.
