I am so happy that I got you for my doctor when I went to the Charlottetown Clinic. You were so patient and kind and knew what you were doing. When a patient sees that, they know they are in good hands. The fact that you make your own phone calls to the patient makes you extra special in the field of medicine. It gives that "personal touch". Thank you and I hope you stay in Charlottetown for a long time....we need you.

    Copy of support letter to
    Mr Paul Maddison
    High Commissioner
    High Commission of Canada
    cnbra@international.gc.ca
    Canberra, Australia

    Cc. St Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg

    Your Excellency

I was disgusted to that the Chief Medical Officer, of St Boniface Hospital, Dr Hussam Azzam was fired for rightfully and decently criticising Israel's state terrorism ie its daily war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated against the indigenous Palestinian men, women, children and elders - with impunity, I add, by your government.

So, it follows that the cue for the audacity to curb freedom of speech and execute such an appalling injustice by St Boniface Hospital comes directly from the top; from PM Trudeau and the Canadian government.

We have seen how Israel pulls the strings of the British parliament, and it is no less cringeworthy to see Canada hand over its democratic sovereignty, principles and national respect to a foreign rogue state.

PM Trudeau deserves praise for his welcoming, unlike Trump, refugees escaping nations torn apart by western Coalition military aggression and interference, but what about Palestine? Dr Azzam spoke for the Palestinian voiceless and as a medico with a trail of qualifications, MBBS, MMedEd, FAcadMEd, FRCSC, MRCOG, FACOG, CCPE, his concerns run deeper and more astutely than Trudeau's for Palestine's suffering.

I urge you to a request the government of Canada investigates this matter and demands Dr Azzam's immediate and unconditional reinstatement and an apology by the hospital.

    Sincerely

    Dr Vacy Vlazna

I am sending this following letter. What more can I do to help? Can we compose an open letter on your behalf?
    January 27, 2017

Dr. Bruce Roe, President & CEO
    St. Boniface Hospital
    409 Taché Avenue
    Winnipeg MB Canada R2H 2A6
    204.233.8563
    sbghweb@sbgh.mb.ca <sbghweb@sbgh.mb.ca>;

    Dear Dr. Roe:

Many of us who are concerned about freedom of speech in Canada are appalled at your hospital's firing of Dr. Hussam Azzam, reportedly because of his criticism of the Israeli government. As outstanding as St. Boniface Hospital is, the firing of Dr. Azzam discredits both the hospital and those who made such a shameful decision.

Dr. Azzam's community outreach can only be described as spectacular, from looking at his website. I have never seen such a publicly-spirited doctor. (The closest I can think of is a well-known Toronto paediatrician at Sick Kids who lists his phone number for those who need him for local emergencies.)

Although this is irrelevant to the principle of free speech -- and I don't know what Dr. Azzam said to lose his job -- you may be aware that the United Church of Canada (UCC) --along with many US churches - have [long had] campaigns to boycott Israeli settlement goods in response to Israel's terrible oppression of the Palestinians. In 2006, the UCC General Council also called for its members not to invest in corporations that profited from Israel's settlements, the (illegal) wall on occupied Palestinian territory, or the Israeli Defense Forces. Mainline US churches are also calling for divestment.

Although this oppression is routinely censored from Canadian news, those who care to follow it are appalled by the daily, unpunished brutality that Palestinians face. Independent Jewish Voices Canada was founded to be a Jewish voice that supports justice for Palestinians, and to make clear the difference between anti-Israel and anti-Semitism. A nation-wide United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel is a UCC-related, interfaith organization that supports boycott and divestment to support a just peace. UN leaders (including a post GA president and Richard Falk) have called for boycott of Israel, and the recent UN resolution will invite the PLO to sue Israel at the International Criminal Court.

We live at a time when our civil liberties are at risk, given the terrifying implications of bill C51 (now known as the 2015 anti-terrorism act). It should be unacceptable that anyone should lose their job because they express their opinion, regardless of what that opinion is.

We hope that St. Boniface Hospital will reconsider its treatment of Dr. Azzam and will stand up for the freedoms of speech and belief that Canadians expect and deserve as their right.

    Sincerely,
